On the continent, the colonists were fighting the Revolutionary War – that ended and culminated in the Treaty of Paris (signed on September 3, 1783) that recognized the sovereignty of the United States over the territory bounded roughly by what is now Canada to the north, Florida to the south, and the Mississippi River to the west.
In the Islands, separate chiefdoms ruled separate parts of the Islands. However, conquest was in the air and battles and negotiations for power and control were going on. Kahekili invaded and conquered O‘ahu, Kamehameha defeated Kiwalaʻo on Hawai‘i.
